During his lifetime, Alfonso was first in line to his father's throne of England and to his mother's county of Ponthieu.

Alphonso was born at Bayonne, in Gascony, and named after his maternal uncle, King Alfonso X of Castile, who was his godfather.

His death left his brother as the only surviving male heir of Edward I. Alphonso was interred in The Confessors Chapel at Westminster Abbey, although the exact location is unknown. His heart, however, was buried at the priory of Blackfriars, London (now destroyed).

Edwatd succeeded his father as King of England when Edward I died on 7 July 1307. Edward II was crowned on 25 February 1308.

Edward was murded by an agent of his mother Isabella and her lover Roger Mortimer. Mortimer was hanged by Edward III and Isabella was spared and gave he gave her a generous allowance, but ensured that she retired from public life for several years. She died at Hertford on 23 August 1358.

After the death of her first husband Sir William Marshall on 6 April 1231, days before their seventh anniversary the widowed Eleanor swore a holy oath of chastity in the presence of Edmund Rich, Archbishop of Canterbury. Seven years later, she met Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester. They fell in love and married secretly on 7 January 1238 at the King's chapel in Westminster Palace. The marriage was controversial because of the oath Eleanor had sworn several years before to remain chaste. Because of this, Simon made a pilgrimage to Rome seeking papal approval for their union.
