General:
Thomas Basset's name frequently appears among the barons acting judicially in the Curia Regis starting in 1175. He served as a justice itinerant for six years in no less than fifteen other counties

Thomas was High Sheriff of Oxfordshire and Berkshire in 1163, and appointed as on of the 18 Itinerant Justices with Oxfordshire and the adjoining counites. He served King Henry II in various wars during Henry's reign, and was rewarded by a grant of the lordship of Hedendon, the Hudred of Boledon, and the Hundred without the North Gate of Oxford in fee farm at a yearly rent of £20. He died the same year he recieved the mark of royal favor, leaving one daughter and three sons, Gilbert, Thomas, and Alan.
