James married 3 times, after his first wife died in 1839. He married Charlotte Woolnough in 1842 but she died in 1853, and was burried at the Ipswich Holy Trinity Church on 23 February 1853. He then married Susan Lord in 1858.

James married Sarah Beart, daughter of Thomas Warner and Sarah Beart, on 15 February 1835 in Nacton, Suffolk. (Sarah Beart was born in September 1815 in Nacton, Suffolk, baptised on 14 September 1815 in Nacton, Suffolk, died on 18 April 1839 in Levington, Suffolk and was buried on 18 April 1839 in Nacton, Suffolk.) The cause of her death was Consruptition.
